What's New with Our Education
» 90% Of Lawmakers Do Not Support An American Right To Quality Education Published 08/20/2009 Eight student members of Our Education gathered in Washington DC to meet with lawmakers about student priorities in school reform in August.  The students came from across the country to push for a common vision: a day when all American children enjoy the right to a high quality public education.

Sadly, America's elected officials are high on rhetoric, but low on action, that would bring such a day about.  Read about the results of the meetings in this final report.

In addition to participating in meetings with national officials and legislative staff, the DC event witnessed another turning of the page for Our Education: a transition of executive duties from founder and former director Aaron Tang to a new staff comprised entirely of student leaders.  Best wishes and luck to them as they embark on their one year vision of empowering and engaging increasing numbers of high school students to serve on local school boards.

» Our Education Creates Students Bill of Rights Published 08/11/2009 It is common sense: every child deserves and needs basic resources to succeed in school, like good teachers, adequate school resources, challenging curriculum, and high expectations.  But to date, Congress has never guaranteed America's children these essential policies and school supports.

With this in mind, Our Education's Youth Action Board has written a Students Bill of Rights representing what American youth believe the right to a high quality public education ought to mean in a real, concrete way.  Members of Our Education will be convening in Washington DC to present the document and the results of our national youth petition campaign on August 10 - 12, and we will be issuing a final report detailing Congress's views and responses to the priorities of students thereafter.

» Students Meet with DC Law-Makers Published 07/30/2007

A group of fifty leading high school students from across the country met with more than fifteen law-makers in Washington, DC last week.  Led by a team of eight Our Education volunteer staff, the high school students asked their Congressmen, Senators, and key staff tough questions about the future of national K-12 education policy, particularly with regard to No Child Left Behind set to be re-authorized in the next two years.

The students pushed their officials to include students in the dialogue around re-authorization, and to consider the important concept of high quality education as a constitutional right for all children.  A group of eight students also met with Deputy Secretary of Education Ray Simon to request the creation of a permanent student advisory body at the department of education.

The lobbying day was run in partnership with Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership, the nation's premiere youth leadership development organization.

Our Education Statement on
Strong American Schools and “Ed in 08”

Our Education, a national membership organization of over 16,000 high school and college students who believe that all American children should have access to high quality educational opportunities, announced its support for the Strong American Schools “Ed in 08” campaign today.

In America, where two-thirds of children are unable to read at grade level proficiency, more than a million students drop out of school each year, and staggering educational inequality persists along socioeconomic, geographic, and racial lines, there is no issue more vital to securing our national well-being than education.  Yet in election after election, the schools that more than 50 million American youth attend each year receive little more than surface-level attention from the candidates.  We applaud the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Ely & Edythe Broad foundation for their leadership in recognizing that this must change in order to bring about dramatic improvement in our schools.

We eagerly look forward to working with Ed in 08 to mount sustained public pressure on all presidential candidates to put forth serious, sensible plans on how they intend to address the crises in our nation’s schools.  And we look forward to a healthy dialogue among the candidates that recognizes young people themselves as important stakeholders and resources in school reform.
